The shoemaker and his wife hid and waited. Late at night they saw two elves sneak into the shoemaker's shop. The elves made a new pair of shoes in a flash. The wife saw that the elves shook while they worked. It was winter and quite cold. The wife felt sorry for the elves. She decided to make them two jackets. That way they would be warmer. She hoped they would make two pairs of shoes the next night.
The next night, the two elves found their jackets. They were red with gold buttons. They put on the jackets. They were so happy they danced. They shouted, "What pretty jackets! We'll never be cold again."
